JEM CPA, PLLC

Hey, I'm Josh.

I'm the licensed Texas CPA behind JEM CPA. Solo by design, paperless by choice, and easy to actually reach. Here's a little more about how I work.

Why I Started JEM CPA

I started JEM CPA because I wanted to run the kind of practice I would want to be a client of. One where you actually talk to the person doing the work. One where the answer to a question doesn't take three weeks to come back. One where your books are kept with tax season in mind all year, not pulled together in a panic in March.

Big firms are built for big clients. That makes sense for big clients. It often does not make sense for individuals with one complicated return a year, or for the small business owner who needs a real conversation, not a portal ticket. JEM CPA is built for the second group on purpose.

Background

A few professional details, for anyone who cares to know.

  • BBA in Accounting from The University of Texas at Austin
  • MS in Accountancy, concentration in taxation, from the University of Houston
  • Over a decade of accounting experience
  • Licensed Texas CPA
  • Member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA)

How I Work

A modern, remote first practice that runs on a few simple ideas.

Direct Access

You work with me. Not a receptionist, not a junior associate, not a different person every year. When you reach out, I am the one who answers.

Paperless From Day One

Documents come in through a secure client portal. Engagement letters get signed electronically. Invoices and messages live in one place. No printing, no faxing, no driving to an office.

Year Round, Not Just at Tax Time

I do not disappear after April 15. Questions, planning, IRS notices, projections, entity decisions, mid year check-ins. That is all part of the relationship.

Plain English

Tax code language is part of the job. Talking to clients in tax code language is not. I will explain what you need to know in words that actually mean something.

Retainer Billing

You pay a retainer up front. Any additional charges are settled once your return is prepared and ready for your signature. No hourly billing, no surprise invoices in the mail.

Responsive

One business day for most replies during normal hours. Faster during tax season for active clients. If something is urgent, say so and I will treat it that way.

Who I Work With

Two kinds of clients, equally important to the firm.

Individuals and households. Especially anyone whose return is more interesting than a basic W-2: rental property owners, people with equity compensation, the self-employed and side hustlers, anyone going through a major life event (marriage, divorce, a death in the family, a home sale).

Small business owners. Sole proprietors, single member LLCs, partnerships, and S corporations who need bookkeeping, tax prep, and a CPA who actually picks up. If you have been thinking about an entity change, or your books are behind, or your old CPA disappears between January and April, I can help.

Most clients are in the Spring and Woodlands area, but a fair number work with me remotely from elsewhere in Texas. The whole practice is built to make distance a non-issue.

Who This Isn't For

Honesty saves everyone time. JEM CPA probably isn't the right fit if any of the following is true.

You are over $10M in revenue

At that size the work calls for a team, not a solo CPA. A midsize firm will serve you better and you should hire one.

You sell across many states

Multistate sales tax nexus is its own specialty. It is not work JEM CPA takes on, and you will be better served by a firm that focuses on it full time.

You want aggressive tax shelters

JEM CPA files returns that hold up under audit. If a strategy sounds too good to be true, it probably is, and it will not get signed here.

You want the cheapest option

JEM CPA is not the low bidder. It is the firm that picks up the phone in October when the IRS sends a letter, and the one that keeps your books ready for tax season all year.

Still sound like a fit? Book a consultation. No pressure either way.

Not Sure What You Need?

That is the most common reason people book a consultation. Come as you are. No pressure, no jargon, just a real conversation about your situation. If JEM CPA is the right fit, great. If not, I will tell you that too.
